EarthLink’s Business Model: Back to the Past!

I saw this when I was just about to leave the office. EarthLink made the headlines with a business model crafted from its glorious past! After their repeated unsucceful attempts to establishing themselves as a mobile phone services carrier aimed at teens, running a municipal wide WiFi network in Philadelphia and offering broadband services over power lines (BPL) they decided to stick to what they know best: Dialup service!

What they do essentially is buying dialup subscribers from other operators that see dialup as a burden to their core business of DSL and fiber. In fact, although dialup is a dying business it (still) provides the critical mass for EarthLink to be profitable. The company showed $54.4M profits for the first quarter of the year! I’m sure they have to think of something else for the long-term but so far things seems to be working out just fine for them.

Once again, every era hides possibilities that don’t meet the eye!
