 Thuesdays Reading List

I’ve wiped out a big part of my long to-do list the last few weeks (I plan to talk about some of the stuff I did this month in future posts). While I get back on blogging track here’s some of the nicest things I’ve read this week.

InfoDEV & ITU published ” Module 4: Universal Access and Service ” of their ICT Regulation Toolkit . The module addresses the basic concepts of universal access and service and provides general information for understanding these concepts. A good read for someone not entirely familiar with US and an excellent reference point for everyone.

New Zealand has issued a consultation round for their national FTTH project. Tim provides immediate coverage .

AKAMAI published its 2008Q4 report on State of the Internet . Although the report uses AKAMAI service usage as a proxy to monitor the state of the Internet its methodological consistency provides a good understanding on internet usage trends and patterns.

A few days ago Benoit posted on his blog a subtitled version of Free’s press conference for its 2008 results. It seems that Free flirts with (and have the potentials to) becoming the new European private champion in FTTH following the example of Fastweb in the early 00s. (By the way, 5 years ago it was nearly impossible to find a European conference without any representative from fastweb invited.

Last, the Information Society Commission has released a study on ” Broadband Internet Access Costs ” showing falling prices for broadband services. The price-cuts range from 19% (for 1-2Mbps connections) to 29% (for 2-4Mbps) and only 4% (for 4-8Mbps). Greece does very well in this, and ranks 4th in overall competitivenes in terms of average prices for broadband packages.
